OneCard has recently issued a big alert to its customers. In this, people have been warned about a new fraud called WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Fraud. Many people have fallen prey to this fraud because most of them are not aware of it. If you get caught in this trap, your bank account can be emptied, and your personal information can be stolen.
What is WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Fraud?
According to OneCard, in this scam, fraudsters deceive someone into turning on screen sharing on WhatsApp. As soon as screen sharing is turned on, the fraudsters see all your sensitive information like OTPs, bank details, passwords, and messages.
How does this fraud work?
Trust - The scammer introduces himself as an employee of a bank or a financial company. He says that there is a problem with your account and asks you to share the screen. This is where the fraud starts.
Beginning - The fraudster explains to you step-by-step how to turn on screen-sharing. Then he makes an excuse that he is not able to see the screen. After this, he asks you to start a WhatsApp video call.
Fraud - As soon as you do screen-sharing, the fraud starts watching your mobile screen live. Then he does a transaction by calling it verification. As soon as you enter OTP or PIN, that information goes directly to the fraud.
Second method - Keyboard logger
Sometimes the scammer installs a malware app called Keyboard Logger on your phone. It records your every typing. This is why many bank websites provide an On-Screen Keyboard so that the logger cannot catch your typing. In this way, your bank password and social media password can also be stolen.
Use of stolen information
When the fraud gets all your information, he withdraws money from the bank account, makes unauthorized transactions and can also do other frauds using the identity.
