A mild earthquake rattled Visakhapatnam city in the early hours of Tuesday, causing brief panic among residents who felt the ground shake around 4:20 a.m.
According to preliminary data, the epicentre was near G Madugula village in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district, which likely triggered the light tremors experienced across several parts of the city.
Residents in areas such as Murali Nagar, Gajuwaka, Madhurawada, MVP Colony, and Gopalapatnam reported mild vibrations and rushed out of their homes in fear. Some said they felt beds and windows tremble for a few seconds before the shaking stopped.
Early reports from seismologists suggest the quake measured approximately 3.7 on the Richter scale, classifying it as a low-intensity event.
Officials have confirmed that no damage to life or property has been reported so far. However, local authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and follow safety protocols in the event of aftershocks.
The mild tremor serves as a reminder that even coastal regions like Visakhapatnam, though not in a high-risk seismic zone, can occasionally experience low-level seismic activity.
