You might think you need to spend big to have a proper glass of wine. However, one expert has revealed that actually, the cheap stuff can be perfectly drinkable too - and it doesn't need any special treatment.
Tom Gilbey is an expert in all things wine, and has even written a book about it. He frequently posts reviews and information about wine on social media, and recently took the plunge by tasting the cheapest bottle of red he could get his hands on. The bottle in question is a red wine coming in at £3.55 from Spain (via Aldi).
The Baron St Jean wine is currently available on Aldi's website for even cheaper - a jaw dropping £3.39.
The wine has a 10% ABV and upon pouring Tom did remark that the wine was a little "thin" in appearance. At first sniff, Tom revealed it had given him "a warning hazard in his left nostril".
Upon further inspection, Tom caught a scent of strawberries and even a little cherry before taking a sip.
After only a small grimace, Tom revealed that he was "still alive".
"I find that a bit depressing really," he said.
"There is £0.74 worth of wine bottle stopper and shipping in there - the rest is all tax - so someone is making absolutely nothing on this."
Despite that, Tom deemed this incredibly cheap wine "quite chuggable really".
Comments on the video on Tom's TikTok thanked him for being brave enough to taste the wine, with one person saying it would probably work better for cooking a spaghetti bolognaise than it would for drinking.
Another person was surprised at the result, saying: "for 3.55 I'm surprised it's not just straight arsenic"
Another commenter said there was likely a different motive for trying the cheapest wine money can buy. They said: "If you're drinking wine at £3.55 you're not drinking it for the taste. You're looking to get pissed on a budget"
