A shooter opened fire at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring at least 20 others, according to a Daily Mail report. Authorities later confirmed that the gunman died from self-inflicted injuries.
Mayor Jacob Frey later told reporters that children were among those killed during the morning mass at Annunciation Catholic School. While he did not specify the number of victims, he confirmed that “children are dead.”
“You cannot put into words the gravity, tragedy, or absolute pain of this moment,” Frey said.
US President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the "tragic shooting" and expressed concern over the incident.
Trump said on Truth Social: "I have been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The FBI quickly responded and they are on the scene. The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!"
US Vice President JD Vance wrote on X: "We’re at the White House monitoring the situation in Minneapolis. Join all of us in praying for the victims!"
A Minneapolis hospital confirmed that five children injured in the shooting have been admitted for treatment.
Officials are also looking into preliminary reports suggesting a possible bomb may have been planted inside the church on 54th Street.
The City of Minneapolis confirmed the situation on its official X account, posting: "There is an active police situation at Annunciation Church, 509 W. 54th St." The update added: "There is no active threat to the community at this time. The shooter is contained."
Residents have been urged to stay away from the area to allow emergency services to assist victims.
